An octagonal red sign at an intersection requires you to do what?
The eight-sided red sign is the only sign with that shape, so it can be recognised from behind or in poor visibility. It requires a complete stop at the stop line, crosswalk or edge of the intersection, whichever you reach first. You may proceed only after stopping and only when the way is clear.

What does a yellow diamond-shaped sign tell you?
Yellow diamonds are warning signs. They alert you to something ahead that is not obvious - a curve, a narrowing road, a hidden intersection - so you can adjust your speed before you reach it. Orange diamonds carry the same shape but signal temporary construction conditions.

A downward-pointing triangle with a red border means:
This is the yield sign. You must slow down, be prepared to stop, and let traffic already in or approaching the intersection go first. A yield differs from a stop in that you need not halt if the way is genuinely clear, but you must be able to stop if it is not.

A green circle on a regulatory sign indicates that the action shown is permitted.
Ontario regulatory signs use colour as a code: a green circle means you may do the thing shown, while a red circle with a diagonal slash means you may not. Recognising the circle colour lets you read the sign correctly even if the symbol inside is unfamiliar.

A yellow diamond showing two children walking means:
The two-children symbol marks a school area ahead. It warns you to expect pedestrians who may step out unpredictably and to watch for reduced speed limits and crossing guards during school hours. In some locations the sign is fluorescent yellow-green for extra visibility.

Common questions
How many questions are on the Ontario G1 test?
Forty in total: 20 road sign questions and 20 rules of the road questions. Each section is scored separately.
What score do I need to pass the G1?
At least 16 correct out of 20 in each section, which is 80 percent. Scoring well in one section does not compensate for failing the other.
Is the G1 test timed?
DriveTest centres do not enforce a strict clock for most candidates, but our simulation mode applies a 40 minute limit so you learn to work at a steady pace.
How much does the G1 test cost?
Fees are set by DriveTest and change periodically. Check the current fee on the official DriveTest site before booking.
Can I retake the G1 if I fail?
Yes. You can rebook and retake the test, paying the retest fee each time. Focusing your study on the section you failed is the fastest route to passing.
Are these the real G1 questions?
No. These are original questions written from the official MTO Driver's Handbook, the same source the real test draws on. They cover the same material without reproducing the exam.
