The Ontario G1 test is a two-part written exam of 40 multiple-choice questions, 20 on road signs and 20 on rules of the road. You must answer at least 16 of 20 correctly in each part to pass. Practice here with questions written from the official MTO Driver's Handbook, each with an explanation and a source reference.

About this exam

Every question on this page is written from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation Driver's Handbook, the same publication DriveTest examiners draw the real test from. The G1 is the first stage of Ontario's graduated licensing system: passing it lets you drive with an accompanying fully licensed driver while you build the experience needed for the G2 road test.

The exam is split evenly. Twenty questions cover road signs, testing whether you can read a sign by its shape, colour and symbol without relying on words. Twenty more cover the rules of the road, covering right of way, speed limits, following distance, alcohol and drug rules, and what to do at collisions. Each half is scored separately, and you must reach 16 correct in each half. Getting 20 of 20 on signs will not rescue a 15 on rules.

The practice mode below gives you immediate feedback on each answer along with the handbook passage the question comes from. The simulation mode mirrors the real test structure and withholds all feedback until you finish, so you can find out how you would actually score before you pay the DriveTest fee.

Common questions

How many questions are on the Ontario G1 test?

Forty in total: 20 road sign questions and 20 rules of the road questions. Each section is scored separately.

What score do I need to pass the G1?

At least 16 correct out of 20 in each section, which is 80 percent. Scoring well in one section does not compensate for failing the other.

Is the G1 test timed?

DriveTest centres do not enforce a strict clock for most candidates, but our simulation mode applies a 40 minute limit so you learn to work at a steady pace.

How much does the G1 test cost?

Fees are set by DriveTest and change periodically. Check the current fee on the official DriveTest site before booking.

Can I retake the G1 if I fail?

Yes. You can rebook and retake the test, paying the retest fee each time. Focusing your study on the section you failed is the fastest route to passing.

Are these the real G1 questions?

No. These are original questions written from the official MTO Driver's Handbook, the same source the real test draws on. They cover the same material without reproducing the exam.
