The Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, five of which change shape at the end of a word. It is written from right to left, and print letters have no capitals. This course teaches every letter with its sound and a stroke sample, then has you trace and draw them from memory, a lesson at a time.

About this exam
Each letter has a card with its sound, its name, an example word and the letters it is easily confused with. Eight lessons take you from the first five letters to reading short sentences with vowel marks, and every lesson ends with a short test that includes letters you draw.
Common questions
How long does it take to learn the Hebrew alphabet?
Most learners can recognise all 22 letters within one or two weeks of short daily practice. Writing them from memory takes a little longer, which is why every lesson here ends with letters you draw.
Do I need to learn the vowel marks?
Yes, at first. Books for learners print the vowel marks under the letters, and lesson 7 teaches them. Everyday Hebrew leaves them out, which becomes easy once you know enough words.
Why do some letters have two shapes?
Five letters – kaf, mem, nun, pe and tsadi – take a different shape at the end of a word. The sound stays the same. Lesson 4 covers all five.
